My journey began with obtaining a Cuban visa from the Embajada de Cuba in Mexico City. From my hotel in the Colonial Zone, I embarked on a memorable pink taxi ride, paying 50 pesos for the one-way trip. The morning sun illuminated the vibrant streets as we made our way to the embassy.
Language barriers initially posed a challenge as the Spanish-speaking receptionist greeted me. However, with the unexpected assistance of another fellow working inside who spoke English, I was able to navigate the transaction process successfully. After paying the required fees, I eagerly awaited my visa card, which arrived in just a few minutes. This small but essential document became my ticket to unlocking the wonders of Havana, a city brimming with captivating culture, rich history, and undeniable charm. With my visa in hand, I eagerly set off to explore the enchanting streets of Havana and embrace the adventures that awaited me.

After my visit to the Embajada de Cuba in Mexico City, I decided to make a detour and indulge in the stunning beauty of Cancun before continuing my journey to Havana. Spending a couple of days in this tropical paradise, I immersed myself in the crystal-clear turquoise waters and lounged on the pristine white sand beaches.
As my departure day approached, I bid farewell to Cancun's breathtaking landscapes and headed to the airport. April 23,8:10 am, I boarded the Interjet flight that would take me from Cancun to Havana. Excitement filled the air as I settled into my seat, ready to embark on the next leg of my Cuban adventure.
The flight from Cancun to Havana was a short and smooth two-hour journey through the skies. As the plane descended, we landed at José Martí International Airport, the gateway to the vibrant city of Havana. Stepping off the plane, I made my way to the immigration line, feeling a mixture of anticipation and slight nervousness. Aware of the strict protocols often associated with communist countries, I approached the immigration officer with confidence, presenting my documents without hesitation. To my relief, the process was swift, and I was granted entry into Cuba.
As I exited the immigration area and walked through the airport, I couldn't help but notice the distinct architectural character of the terminal. The buildings were adorned with themes of concrete painted in white and vibrant shades of red. This unique combination created an atmosphere that exuded both a sense of history and a touch of nostalgia.
Upon entering the arrival lobby, I was warmly greeted by the airport taxi transfer that I had arranged through my Airbnb host. As we made our way outside the airport, the sight of numerous classic cars parked in the parking area caught my attention. It was a quintessential scene that immediately confirmed I had arrived in Cuba. Embracing the authenticity of the experience, I stepped into a charming 1950s classic car, which would serve as my mode of transportation to the hotel. With a mixture of excitement and wonder, I embarked on a memorable ride through the captivating streets of Havana, eager to begin my exploration of this enchanting city.
My chosen accommodation in Havana, booked through Airbnb, not only provided a comfortable stay but also offered the convenience of having internet access.it was a rare find situated near the coast, in close proximity to the iconic Maximo Gomez monument. This prime location offered not only its proximity to the sea but also easy access to an array of restaurants that dotted the area. With my offline map as my trusty guide, I discovered that all the major landmarks and attractions were within walking distance from my cozy abode.
Just a single turn from my accommodation led me to the magnificent El Capitolio, a grand architectural marvel that exuded timeless beauty. Along the straight path of the historic boulevard P. de Marti, I could reach a multitude of destinations, each holding its own charm and allure. During my stay in Havana, I encountered two currencies: the CUC (Cuban Convertible Peso) and the CUP (Cuban Peso). The CUC is the currency mainly used by tourists, while the CUP is the national currency used by locals. It's important to note that the exchange rate between the two currencies is different.
The CUC is often tied to the US dollar and is commonly used in hotels, restaurants, and other establishments catering to tourists. It is also the currency used for most tourist activities, such as entrance fees to museums and attractions. With the CUC, I was able to enjoy the convenience of using a currency widely accepted in tourist-oriented areas.
On the other hand, the CUP is primarily used by locals for everyday transactions and purchases in local markets, street vendors, and smaller establishments. This currency has a significantly lower value compared to the CUC. While the CUP may not be as widely accepted in tourist areas, using it allowed me to experience a more authentic glimpse into the local way of life and engage in transactions with local vendors.
To ensure I had access to both currencies, I exchanged some of my US dollars to CUC with the assistance of my host, Rafael. Exchanging money with locals who are familiar with the currency exchange process can be convenient and provide better rates compared to official exchange offices.
By utilizing both the CUC and the CUP, I was able to navigate through different aspects of Havana's vibrant culture, catering to both tourist-oriented activities and engaging with the local community. This allowed me to have a well-rounded experience and a deeper understanding of the economic nuances within the city.
Embarking on a self-guided adventure through Havana, I found myself freely exploring the city's enchanting streets and visiting the landmarks that appeared on my trusty offline app. Despite not having mobile data and facing difficulties obtaining it at the time, I relied on the offline map's tailored feature, which provided me with a curated path to nearby attractions.
Throughout the day, I captured snapshots of the classical buildings that lined my route, each one exuding the timeless beauty that Havana is renowned for.
As I wandered, I encountered numerous fellow tourists, including a group of fascinating individuals from Belgium who shared my admiration for Havana's charm. It was heartwarming to witness European visitors savoring their mojitos at local bars, even during the daytime, and joyfully dancing to the rhythmic beats of traditional Cuban performances, accompanied by the delightful sounds of maracas. The locals, too, indulged in Cuban tobacco, creating an atmosphere brimming with cultural richness.
Surrounded by uniformed officers patrolling the streets, I felt a sense of safety as I wandered alone through the city. Havana embraced me with open arms, as if reassuring me that my solo exploration was not only possible but also an enriching experience. With the day coming to a close, I found myself enjoying a delectable dinner and sipping on a refreshing mojito at a nearby bar, conveniently located close to my haven. Armed with the cherished photos I had captured throughout the day, I relished the satisfaction of a successful and memorable DIY tour in this captivating city.
The following day, I embarked on an exciting shared tour with fellow visitors from New York, which I had booked through Airbnb. The pick-up point conveniently happened to be at the Bacardi building, just a few steps away from my casa(accommodation/hotel). The driver took immense pride in his vehicle, and it added an extra touch of nostalgia and charm to our adventure.

With its monumental presence and captivating architecture, served as a symbol of Havana's past glory and continues to inspire admiration to this day. Its grandeur, which I had previously only seen in postcards, had now become a reality, etching a lasting impression on my journey through Cuba.
However, despite the allure of El Capitolio's magnificent exterior, I couldn't help but feel a tinge of disappointment as I was unable to explore its interior. Unfortunately, during my visit, access to the building's interior was restricted. Nonetheless, the majestic sight of El Capitolio from the outside still left an indelible impression, reminding me of the enduring beauty and cultural significance it holds in the heart of Havana.
As my time in Havana, Cuba came to a close, I couldn't help but reflect on the significance of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Visiting Cuba had been a dream sparked by the curiosity ignited back home in the Philippines when Che Guevara's iconic image graced t-shirts and became a popular topic of conversation. Intrigued by Cuba's history and governance, I yearned to experience it firsthand.
During my tour, I had the privilege of learning about Che Guevara and his influential role in Cuban history from our knowledgeable guide. It was a captivating journey of discovery, and I encourage others to delve into it themselves. The allure of Havana, with its vibrant streets, rich culture, and architectural wonders, made the experience all the more worthwhile.
With Cuba now checked off my bucket list, I eagerly look ahead to my next travel destination, New York. The world is vast and filled with countless wonders waiting to be explored. Each journey unveils new insights, broadens perspectives, and feeds the insatiable desire to embrace the diversity our planet has to offer. As I bid farewell to Havana and boarded my Interjet flight back to Cancun, then onward to the United States, I carried with me cherished memories and the anticipation of future adventures yet to come.
